Sant’Agata sui due golfi is located about 6km from Sorrento and 390mt above the sea level. It is a well know holiday resort and one of the pearls in the gulfs of Naples and Salerno and faces Capri. Perched on a hill, it offers a variety of views over the sea and the two bays.
The Etruscans, Greeks and Romans were enchanted by the beauties of the “Land of Sirens” and lived in the wooded hills for centuries. This has been confirmed by the large necropolis that exists on the hill of the northen side of the village. Later it was inhabited by the Carmelite Fathers who built a Monastery wich they named of “Deserto”.
This monumental complex is situated on the hill, also named “Deserto”, and certainly has the most panoramic view of the whole Sorrento peninsula. In the Roman age it became the center of the merchant traffic between the two gulfs. The church of Sant’Agata, dedicated to Santa Maria delle Grazie, was built in the shape of a Latin cross, and houses a beautiful high altar. It is an important work of the Florentine school of the XVI century and is a fantastic example of polychrome marble, hard-shaped stones and mother of pearl.
The hiking paths through the local countryside are only some of the opportunities available in the “Land of Sirens”: to the bays of Crapolla and Jeranto (protected area FAI), to San Costanzo and Punta Campanella, in a wild and uncontaminated Mediterranean backdrop.
